Ecological Damages from Canadian Capitalism

The concept of imperialism has become more and more relevant in our world today, with the Capitalist power-house nations of the west taking full advantage of the third world nations for pure profit. And that prosperity is driven not only by a desire for consmer markets and cheap labour but also by a thirst for access to ecological wealth in the form of rich natural resources in the global south (Gould, Lewis, 2009: 53). Its funny to think of this Imperialism concept to be strictly American, and to think of Canada as a peace keeping driven nation when they are just as bad at exploiting these third world nations. Political parties in Canada still do not consider Canada to be a core capitalist power in the world. Canadian governments have shown a flat-out refusal to impose any kind of human rights standards on Canadian company’s actions outside of Canada. Canada has signed “Foreign Investment Protection Agreement” (FIPA) to protect the rights of Canadian companies, and also to allow the ability to repatriate profits to their home economies. Powerful companies from the North have gained unprecedented access to the economic and natural resources of developing countries, disposing billions of people of these resources in the process.
